Two years ago, I discovered a new
style in creating quilts - modern quilt.
One of the methods of creating such
quilts is improvisational piecing - cutting and sewing
without the use of templates and definite schemes.
For my new quilt I chose one
hand-dyed and two additional fabrics.
Cut some bias stripes freehand, without using a ruler.
Randomly cut the main fabric hand-dyed with my quilt-friend Tatiana last
autumn. Tatiana's blog is here
And began sewing in stripes between the parts of the main fabric.
Things moved quickly, because the
strips were cut on the bias.
While sewing along trimming of
edges is needed.
That's what happened as a result.
Added the frame and quilted on a long-arm machine.
After quilting I always stretch the half-finished moistened quilt to attach it to the correct form.
This quilt was
created for the continuation of the project on Japanese poetry. This project we
carry out with my quilt-friend Elena Folomeva since 2012, Elena's blog is here.
Laconism
and minimalism of Japanese poems, on the one hand, specify certain frames to
create the quilt, and provide more flexibility in the filling of this
framework, on the other.

And here's a haiku that I wanted to illustrate with this quilt.
The father, having lost a son
Drooped his head —
As if the whole world is overturned,
Bamboo under the snow.
As if the whole world is overturned,
Bamboo under the snow.
It’s a very personal
story for me about a family, where parents have lost two children. I just tried
to express my sympathy with them.
Finished quilt could be seen at
the Festival of artistic textiles Kurocka Rjaba in St. Petersburg at the end of
October, where a part of our project was shown.

is a crucial place.
General
view of our exposition with Elena. The
project has 19 works. Here are only 8 quilts from the project. We think the project will be continued.
